Bernard Meltzer once quoted, “There is no better exercise for your heart than reaching down and helping to lift someone up”. Dibas Kumar Sahu, a primary school teacher from Odisha, with the help of his knowledge and technical skills, helped thousands of stranded migrant workers reach their native homes, during the Covid lockdown. You heard that right. Thousands of migrant workers reached their abode, both in and out of Odisha, because of his intelligence, technical know-how and most importantly because he took initiative.
Most citizens know about the extensive aid provided to the migrant workers by Mr Sonu Sood, but only a few know that there were many other, not so famous samaritans, doing their part at the time of crisis. Dibas Kumar Sahu is a real-life hero who selflessly supported migrants in their journey to their base, by harnessing his technical prowess. Belonging to a small district, Bargarh, in Odisha, at a young age, he has touched so many lives already and made a real positive impact on them.
Social work engagements of Dibas
Along with helping the needy with their travel arrangements, he even provided for their food and helped them out of his own pocket when necessary. Using the Twitter platform and dialogues with the Collectors and Superintendents of Police, he arranged the travel of thousands of workers stranded in different parts of India including his own state Odisha. And this is just one drop in his sea of social work engagements. He has several other initiatives to his name which focus on the betterment of society. Recently he was also covered by newindianexpress.com, for his work towards spreading awareness about road safety and saving the lives of many road accident victims.
The endless list of his contributions further includes work like bringing electrification to almost 200 families in his village and getting solar water tanks installed along with many street lights. So, along with his abundant experience at the ground level, he sure knows how to use the Twitter platform and bring the issues of his surroundings to the notice of authorities.
His noble work for the welfare of society is hugely celebrated in western Odisha. This is an extraordinary journey of a common man who is determined to help the underprivileged section of society. Hope it provides inspiration to the youth of the nation by setting an example, that with the right intentions and strong determination, each of us can make a difference. Small contributions by many will make a big impact for sure.
